Amarandi Barrett's Greece 4 Kids

23. The Athens Zoo!

One day my mom was drinking her coffee when she looked in the newspaper and saw there was a new zoo. At first my dad did not want to go because he did not believe it really was a zoo. He thought it would be like the National gardens where there would just be a few cages and some scruffy animals and a million ducks. Boy were we surprised.
First we called George the Famous Taxi Driver and he did not even know there was a zoo. But we showed him the newspaper and he followed the directions and took us. He was as surprised as us when he saw how big it was. The first thing you see when you get there is this owl named Katie. She sits at the front entrance and she is not shy. You can't pet her but you can get pretty close. (The zoo sent me an e-mail and told me that Katy does not sit at the entrance anymore)

There were mostly birds but lots of other animals too like kangaroos, snakes, lizards, turtles, big cats, midget ponies and some other stuff. The birds were really friendly and you could pet some of them. Most of the zoo was outside and you could walk in the giant cages and have big birds flying all around you.
There were lots of toucans. There were also penguins, ostriches, and some birds I had never even seen before. We were there for about three hours and then we went to the beach and had lunch.

The zoo is right by the airport so if you have time you should go. You can read more about the zoo (and get directions) at my Dad's website:
